Early Life and Family
Kim Jung-nan was born Kim Hyun-ah on July 16, 1971, in Seoul. She grew up in the Oryu-dong area of Guro District. Her father was Kim Joo-il, and her mother was Kim Soon-ja. Tragically, her biological mother passed away when she was young, and she was later raised by a stepmother, Lee Jung-sook. She has a younger brother, Kim Gyo-seong.
Her family background was not wealthy. In a 2012 interview, she revealed that her original name, Kim Hyun-ah, felt like a name with no connection to her parents. Concerned that the name might bring misfortune to her father, she decided to change it-choosing “Kim Jung-nan,” a name her father had given her.
Kim Jung-nan attended Oryu Elementary School, Gaebong Girlsโ Middle School, and Geumok Girlsโ High School. Until her third year of high school, she studied vocal music with dreams of attending a music college. However, her familyโs financial situation made that path difficult. Encouraged by friends, she shifted her focus and applied to Dongguk Universityโs Department of Theater and Film instead.

In 1991, she appeared in KBS dramas including Brother as an office secretary. She initially acted under her birth name, Kim Hyun-ah, but switched to the stage name Kim Jung-nan in 1997.
Hiatus and Return
After appearing in Tomorrow is Love (1992), Kim Jung-nan took a break from acting. The filming schedule didnโt align with her personal ideals, so she temporarily stepped away and returned to university to complete her studies.
