She played small parts in soap opera-style dramas on ABC, MTV, and off-Broadway theater. In 1997, she played the lead role in Splendid Holiday, a Korean TV drama set in New York. Kim decided to head back to Korea. She turned down offers to play in Lee Kwangmo’s feature film Spring in My Hometown as well as a role in the TV drama Wedding Dress. She made her acting debut in 1999 with Shiri, South Korea’s first box office hit. The highest-grossing movie in Korean history at the time was Shiri. She co-starred with Kang Je-Gyu in The Legend of Gingko in November 2000.

Kim performed in the science fiction movie Yesterday after participating in a Japanese movie and a movie with a Los Angeles setting. Then, in 2002, Kim made her cinematic debut in Ardor, a documentary by Byun Young. The movie was invited to screen in a non-competitive section at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2003.
