These 8 K-Pop Idols Were Cast in the Strangest Ways You’ll Ever See

You’ve most likely heard of Korean entertainment organizations holding auditions for trainee positions, which is the most popular way of recruitment. However, being cast by a K-Pop organization isn’t the only method to get noticed, and some idols’ stories are practically unbelievable! It’s astonishing how many current popular K-Pop idols were discovered on the streets or through other means simply because of their appearance or demeanor. Here are 8 idols with some of the oddest or most astonishing casting stories!

1. Eunwoo (ASTRO)

Eunwoo had no desire to become a K-Pop idol when he was younger and instead excelled in school, intending to pursue a career as a lawyer later in life. He planned to ignore a recruiter who approached him after he exited the washroom during a school festival and handed him a business card.

His father, on the other hand, urged him to apply for the company — which turned out to be Fantagio — on the grounds that if he didn’t like it, he could quit. With this suggestion, Eunwoo went on to try out for the company and discovered that he enjoyed it a lot more than he had anticipated, and the rest is history.

2. Nichkhun (2PM)

At the time he was approached by a recruiter, Nichkhun was living in Los Angeles and attending a music festival with bands like as g.o.d and NRG. A woman approached him speaking Korean, but he couldn’t comprehend her because he only spoke English and Thai at the time. The woman’s interpreter stated that she was from JYP Entertainment and that she wanted him to accompany her back to her hotel room to shoot an audition tape!

Of course, Nichkhun thought this was odd and declined the offer, although he did give the woman his phone number. She was adamant about getting him to audition, and she kept calling him about it until he did so in front of a Starbucks near his house. And there was the start of his K-Pop career!

3. YangYang (WayV)

While YangYang’s casting experience was fairly typical, the circumstances surrounding his audition were remarkable! He seriously injured his shoulder while playing basketball and required surgery as a result. He had a dream that led to him becoming a K-Pop idol while undergoing surgery.

At that time, I had a dream that I still remember until now. I’m performing on the stage, but I didn’t know how to dance. I didn’t know the choreography, and I don’t know what the song was. I just stood on the stage. But, nothing happened. It just went normal. Then, I woke up.

He was perplexed by the dream at the time, but only a few weeks later, he spotted an ad for an audition put out by SM Entertainment online and decided he had to try it out. That’s how he ended up at NCT and WayV!

4. JR (NU’EST)

YangYang wasn’t the first idol whose destiny was determined by a fantasy. Pledis Entertainment’s recruiter had a dream that they would locate a K-Pop idol at a specific school in Gangwon, and instead of dismissing it, they chose to investigate.

JR attended that school, and one day on his way home from class, he ran into the recruiter who had had the dream! He went on to become Pledis Entertainment’s first male trainee after that.

5. Ryujin (ITZY)

The casting tale of Ryujin is the kind that most people only fantasize about. She was a major fan of GOT7 at the time, and she was waiting in line for the restroom when she was contacted by a recruiter. Despite her reservations about the offer, she gave the woman her phone number because she was attractive!

I went to see GOT7’s concert. Someone came up to me in front of the bathroom and asked if I could give her my phone number. I was suspicious at first but she was so cute, so I decided to give it to her.

She’s been living the dream since then, working at the same company that used to be home to GOT7!

6. Hongjoong (ATEEZ)

Hongjoong’s casting experience demonstrates how perseverance and patience may help you reach your goals. Several years ago, when KQ Entertainment was a relatively small and obscure company that didn’t even hold auditions, Hongjoong submitted a mixtape in the hopes of being hired as a trainee.

However, the mixtape was not discovered until a year later, when the company was relocating to a new location! Despite how long it had been, they called Hongjoong to see if he was still making music, and he became their first apprentice as a result. And as ATEEZ’s leader today, he still has the same drive and passion!

7. V (BTS)

Several members of BTS ended up joining BigHit Entertainment in unusual ways, to the point where it’s a miracle they’re still alive! The story of V’s casting is no exception. While he has always been interested in music, he just attended a BigHit Entertainment audition to support a buddy who was auditioning.

However, one of the company’s recruiters noticed him and encouraged him to try out as well. V did just that after gaining permission from his father, and he ended up being the only person at the Daegu site to advance to the next round! Of course, the rest is history.

8. Soobin (TXT)

BTS members weren’t the only ones that had unique BigHit Entertainment casting stories. Soobin’s first audition for the company was very standard: he sent a video of himself dancing. When he didn’t hear back from the label after two months, he concluded they weren’t interested in working with him.

Thankfully, nothing could be further from the truth! It turns out that Soobin provided them with the erroneous phone number to contact him with, and it took the company a long time to track down the correct number and call him once they noticed their error. So, in actuality, they went above and above to secure Soobin’s position as a BigHit Entertainment trainee!
