Group History
2009: Japanese Indie Debut
CNBLUE’s journey began in Japan. Their first live performance took place in Tokyo at the entrance of Shinjuku Station in early 2009, among at least 20 other bands performing in the area. By mid-June, they began performing on the streets and in live clubs.
They formally debuted on August 19, 2009, with the English-language indie EP Now or Never. The release failed to chart on the Oricon Albums Chart. In late September 2009, original bassist Kwon Kwang-jin left the band and was replaced by Lee Jung-shin.
Their second indie EP, Voice, was released in November 2009 with both English and Japanese tracks, peaking at number 227 on the Oricon chart. Guitarist Lee Jong-hyun later described the band’s independent activities in Japan as “tough, but equally rewarding”.
2010: Korean Debut and Immediate Success
In January 2010, FNC Entertainment unveiled video teasers for CNBLUE’s South Korean debut. On January 14, 2010, they released their first Korean EP, Bluetory, with the lead single “I’m a Loner” (외톨이야).
